The West Bengal government on Monday, 20 July, announced a complete lockdown for two days every week amid a spike in COVID-19 cases. "Complete lockdown will be in force across West Bengal on Thursday and Saturday this week," state Home Secretary Alapan Bandyopadhyay was quoted by PTI as saying.

Meanwhile, the number of coronavirus cases in India rose by 40,425 to 11,18,043 on Monday, in what is the biggest one-day spike. The death toll increased to 27,497.

According to the Union Health Ministry data, there are currently 3,90,459 active cases across the country, while 7,00,086 patients have been cured or discharged, and one has migrated.

RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav targetted the Nitish Kumar government over the handling of COVID-19 pandemic in Bihar.

“Bihar is gradually going to become a global hotspot of COVID-19, as state government is not worried about the rising number of cases. They are doing nothing to increase testing. The number of COVID deaths is also increasing in Bihar,” he said, as quoted by ANI.

“Different COVID-19 numbers are being given for Bihar by Centre and state. People are receiving test report even when they have not given any sample for test. Medical staff at COVID centres do not have PPE kits. We demand that state government must give a clear picture,” he said.

33 New Cases in Nagaland

Out of 454 samples tested, at least 33 positive cases of COVID-19 have been confirmed in Nagaland, ANI reported quoting S Pangnyu Phom, Minister for Health & Family Welfare.

1,076 New Cases Take Bihar's Tally to 27,455

As many as 1,076 new COVID-19 cases were reported in Bihar on Monday, taking the tally in the state to 27,455.

'Not Much Evidence of Community Transmission at National Level': AIIMS Director

AIIMS Director Randeep Guleria on Monday said "there is not much evidence that there is community transmission happening at the national level".

"But there are hotspots, even in cities where there is a spike of cases, and it is very likely that local community transmission in those areas is happening [sic]," he was quoted as saying by news agency ANI.

He pointed out that certain areas, including Delhi, seem to have hit their peak because the cases have declined significantly. "Certain areas have yet to reach the peak. Cases are increasing in certain states. They will reach the peak a little later," he added.

2-Day Lockdown in West Bengal Every Week

The West Bengal government on Monday announced a complete lockdown for two days every week amid a spike in COVID-19 cases.

“There'll be a two-day complete lockdown every week. In the current week, on Thursday and Saturday, the state government is imposing, in addition to running a broad-based containment zone approach, a complete lockdown all over the state,” state Home Secretary Alapan Bandyopadhyay was quoted by ANI as saying.

He further pointed out that community transmission of COVID-19 has been recorded in a few areas in the state.

954 New COVID-19 Cases in Delhi; Higher Number of Daily Recoveries Once Again

Delhi on Monday reported 954 new COVID-19 cases and 35 deaths, taking the tally in the national capital to 1,23,747 and the death toll to 3,663. The number of daily recoveries once again surpassed the number of new infections, with the active cases tally now standing at 15,166.

Tamil Nadu on Monday reported 4,985 new COVID-19 cases and 70 fatalities, taking the tally in the state to 1,75,678 and the death toll to 2,551.
