Congress Alters Sridevi Condolence Tweet After Backlash
“She was awarded the Padma Shri by the UPA Govt in 2013,” the Congress had tweeted.
Veteran Bollywood actor Sridevi passed away on 24 February due to a cardiac arrest. She was in Dubai for nephew Mohit Marwah’s wedding when the tragedy struck. The news came as a massive shock to the film industry and fans all over the country. Everyone, from fans, to people in the industry, to politicians took to social media to express grief on the actor’s untimely death.
Amid all the social media noise, the Indian National Congress also tweeted their condolences with the tweet saying, “We regret to hear about the passing away of Sridevi. An actor par excellence. A legend who will continue to live in our hearts through her stellar body of work. Our deepest condolences to her loved ones. She was awarded the Padma Shri by the UPA Govt in 2013”.
The tweet saw comments like “You could have also mentioned that she was born when Congress Govt was in power and died when BJP govt is in power” and “I would not be surprised if they extend… she was alive when Indira and Rajiv were prime ministers but died in modi govt. Shameful (sic)”, the Indian Express reported.
The Congress twitter handle reworked the tweet to let go of the sentence that mentioned her winning the Padma Shri in 2003. The tweet now reads, “We regret to hear about the passing away of Sridevi. An actor par excellence. A legend who will continue to live in our hearts through her stellar body of work. Our deepest condolences to her loved ones.”
However, the edited tweet did not make any difference, in fact, it led to more criticism on the social media platform.
