As the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) faced the ire of pro-Jallikattu protesters, Tamil film star Dhanush said on Thursday that he was not part of the animal rights advocacy group.

He also termed an award given to him by the NGO a few years ago as an “insult”.

“A few years ago, PETA honoured me for being a vegetarian. I now consider it a grave insult. I regret it,” he said on being chosen as PETA’s ‘Hottest Vegetarian’ in 2012.

Dhanush said neither he nor any of his family members were a part of PETA.

He urged the Centre to remove bulls from the ‘performing animals’ category in order to allow Jallikattu to be held in the state.

Dhanush also lauded the young Tamil protesters spearheading the pro-Jallikattu agitation for carrying out peaceful and dignified protests. Prime Minister Narendra Modi should promulgate an ordinance to allow the sport, he said.
