A BSF jawan allegedly shot dead three colleagues, before fatally shooting himself with his service weapon on Saturday, 5 May, in Unakoti district, about 180 km from Agartala, reported PTI. A head constable is reportedly among the deceased.

BSF Jawan Sishu Pal allegedly gunned down three of his colleagues: Rinku Kumar (Jammu & Kashmir), Rakesh Kumar Yadav (UP) and Vijay Kumar (Jammu & Kashmir).

Sources told The Quint that SP Lucky Chowhan had rushed to the spot and a large number of TSR jawans have been deployed. Police are reportedly investigating the case.

In December 2017, a CRPF jawan in Chhattisgarh had opened fire on his colleagues with his service weapon, killing two and wounding one, before killing himself in a case of fraticide.

Until August 2017, 310 army personnel reportedly committed suicide while there were 11 cases of fratricide. The country’s 15-lakh strong armed forces continue to lose over 100 personnel a year in stress-related deaths, the report said.

Chhattisgarh alone has seen the most suicides among security forces in more than a decade.
