A love proposal in public has proven to be humiliating for a couple in Bhiwandi, Maharashtra, with community leaders threatening them with embarrassing punishments for their act.

A report in The Times of India said that on 11 March, the man drove to meet the woman at her college. He then stopped his car when he saw her and proposed to her with a rose in hand. The two were then seen embracing. The incident was videotaped by a bystander and was uploaded online the next day with a message demanding action against the two.

Following this, furore erupted and the man was forced to tender an apology. The couple has also been targeted by local groups who said they will make them “do squats in public”.

The National Lokhind Party has decided to take legal action against the two who “stopped traffic”.

Amidst this controversy, the couple fled the city.

Speaking to The Times of India, the woman’s father said, “We are upset. My daughter has threatened to commit suicide if the harassment does not stop. It's unethical to react in this way to a silly mistake.”

The woman’s kin filed a complaint and Manoj Patil, DCP (zone II, Thane) said, “Strict action would be taken against those who are threatening her and her family.”
