2. Welfare Schemes & Sops: LS Campaigning Main Agenda in BBMP Budget

BJP corporators protest inside the council hall of BBMP even as Bengaluru mayor presents the 2019-20 budget for the city on Monday, 18 February.

With one eye trained on the Lok Sabha polls that are less than 60 days away, the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) presented a budget for Bengaluru laden with sops, subsidies and welfare schemes for underprivileged communities.

Decried by the Opposition BJP corporators in the city council as being a ‘bogus’ budget with no actual people-friendly measures, it is clear that Bengaluru citizens are being wooed ahead of the polls. The mayor and deputy mayor in the BBMP council also belong to the ruling Congress-JD(S) coalition in the state, making them an easy target for criticism over a budget that seems motivated by the upcoming polls.

The full dress rehearsals for Aero India on Monday, attended by families of armed forces personnel in Bengaluru, were dominated by the Su-30 MKI, more than one of which flew, even as aerobatics teams and other aircraft took to the skies.

French fighter plane Rafale tried the ‘Cobra’ manoeuvre, where the plane virtually comes to a halt in the air with its nose pointing to the sky. However, this particular move was much better on the eye when the Su-30 did it.

The Russian-origin plane also performed a slew of other manoeuvres and supersonic flypasts that held the audience’s attention.

Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy on Monday sought to underscore the futility of giving a “befitting reply” in the wake of the recent Pulwama terror attack and instead urged the Centre to ensure that appropriate precautionary measures were taken to prevent the recurrence of such incidents.

Innocent lives that have been lost in such terror incidents cannot be brought back by giving any sort of befitting reply, he said. Though he welcomed the reports of gunning down of the alleged mastermind of the Pulwama attack, Kumaraswamy said it was not possible to overcome the hurt and pain caused by the death of the soldiers. He said the Centre should focus more on ensuring peace in parts of the country that have been troubled by terrorism.

5. SC Dismisses PIL Seeking Judicial Probe Into Mirage-2000 Crash

The Supreme Court on Monday dismissed a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) seeking a detailed probe into the crash of the Mirage 2000 aircraft at the HAL Airport in Bengaluru which took the lives of two pilots earlier this month.

A bench comprising Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi and Justice Sanjiv Khanna stated that a judicial inquiry cannot be conducted into such mishaps.

"Do you know Mirage 2000 is of which generation? We are now on the 6th generation. It is bound to crash," a bench of Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi and Justice Sanjiv Khanna asked petitioner-advocate Alakh Alok Srivastava according to a report to Deccan Herald.
