Chhattisgarh Governor Balram Das Tandon passed away on Tuesday, 14 August, at the age of 90.

Tandon was admitted to a hospital in Raipur after he suffered a cardiac arrest earlier in the day. He was appointed as the governor of the state on 14 July 2014.

Born in 1927, Tandon was a Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) pracharak and later joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Punjab.

He was a founding member of the Jan Sangh in 1951, and has served as secretary of Punjab Jan Sangh from 1951 to 1957, and as president of the Punjab BJP from 1995-97.

Tandon has served as cabinet minister in 1977-79 and in 1997-2002 in the ministries headed by Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal. He was elected from Amritsar five times between 1960 and 1977, and was again elected from Rajpura in 1997.
