“Bachelors in BJP Didn’t Know It Was Wedding Season,” Says Ramdev

He also believes that demonetisation will have at least one good effect on weddings: People can’t ask for dowry.

Families planning a wedding faced a major setback with the announcement of ban on the Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 currency notes. But the government allowed people to breathe a sigh of relief on Thursday when they allowed families to make a one-time withdrawal of Rs 2.5 lakh for weddings.

Yoga Guru Baba Ramdev’s view on the entire issue drew some laughter. In an event on Tuesday, Ramdev told NDTV, “Many in the BJP are bachelors... they didn't realise it was wedding season...that was the mistake.”

If they (government) had done this around 15 days or one month later then their weddings wouldn’t have been so badly affected. One good thing that has come out of all this...people cannot demand dowry.

The Yoga Guru had campiagned for the BJP ahead of the 2014 elections.

Demonetising higher currency notes to tighten control on black or untaxed money has created problems for many households.

"(We) decided that for marriage ceremonies, up to Rs 250,000 will be permitted to be withdrawn from the bank account and it has to be drawn... from the father, mother or the person getting married,” Economic Affairs Secretary Shaktikanta Das said on Thursday.

Families who had withdrawn cash in advance were left queuing up in front of banks to exchange their money and the remaining few who didn't have the cash found it difficult to get due to the cash crunch in ATMs.
