Wrestler Babita Phogat, who is rumoured to join politics soon, attended the launch of Dushyant Chautala’s Jannayak Janata Party (JJP), on Sunday, 9 December.

Speaking to The Quint, on the sidelines of the rally in Jind, Babita said that Dushyant was the ‘youth icon’ of Haryana and that he was ill-treated by former Haryana chief minister and his grandfather Om Prakash Chautala’s Indian National Lok Dal (INLD).

When asked what a wrestler was doing at a political rally, Babita said that she has come to represent the issues of women.

“I have come here for the women to represent the issues of the women. I will go to any place to represent the issues of women,” Babita said. Responding to whether she will contest 2019 Lok Sabha elections, Babita said that her focus is on the game now.

“My focus is on the game and the day I have completed my goals as a wrestler, I will then think about joining politics,” Babita said.

She said that she was attending Dushyant’s rally in particular as their families were related.

“Whatever happened with Dushyant Chautala was wrong. Everyone has seen this. If someone throws you out of your own house, it is wrong. They did not go out of the party on their own will,” said Babita.

Asserting that she will always stand for women and be a voice for women, Babita insisted that she had no plans to join politics at the moment.
