The two Kashmiri dry fruit sellers, who were assaulted by several saffron-clad men in Uttar Pradesh’s Lucknow, have expressed their gratitude to those who rushed to their aide when they were being beaten up.
Speaking to NDTV, Mohammed Afzal Naik, one of the victims, said:
The videos showing the two Kashmiris being abused, slapped and beaten have gone viral. The Lucknow incident comes amid the nationwide backlash on Kashmiris following the 14 February Pulwama terror attack, in which 44 CRPF personnel were killed.
Local people, however, rushed to their rescue and informed police, he said.
An "alert citizen" also made a video of the attack, following which police teams swung into action and arrested the main accused, Bajrang Sonkar.
On a tip-off, three others – Himanshu Garg, Aniruddh and Amar Kumar – were also arrested on Thursday, the SSP said.
Sonkar claims to be the president of Vishwa Hindu Dal.
