Six theft-accused persons escaped from a police lockup in Sehore, Madhya Pradesh, in the early hours of Thursday, 2 August.

According to the Additional Superintendent of Police, Sameer Yadav, the six accused fled the police station somewhere between 2 am and 6 am, The Times of India reports.

All six of them are residents of Sonkatch area and were locked up in connection with two thefts in the Sehore district.

The accused have been identified as Kalu Singh, 23, Jatar Singh 25, Pankaj Singh, 23, Bablu 27, Mohabat Singh, 23, and Kalam Singh, the report adds.

The six reportedly escaped from the lock-up by breaking open the lock, and the main door of the police station.

The police have launched an enquiry against the policemen, who they believe were responsible for their escape. They have also initiated a hunt for the six accused, circulating their pictures on social media for information, the report states.

While several police sources said that the CCTV camera inside the lock-up was not functioning, ASP Yadav countered this and said that it was. He added that attempts were being made for the footage to be recovered.
