The Indian customs department came across a large scale fraud as its IT systems were hacked into which led to data manipulation causing a loss of nearly 50 crore.
A complaint was registered with the Delhi police who has delegated the matter to be on top priority with the Cyber cell, according to a report by The Times of India.
Two businessmen have been narrowed in on as the suspects behind the hack. However, an insider role has not been ruled out yet.
The role of at least six firms is being probed who encashed the benefits that were enhanced through fake receipts.
An internal inquiry will be conducted whose report will be submitted to the police.
The taxes of exporters were also refunded who could in turn use them to pay import duties on inputs.
An FIR has been registered and currently the police is trying to track the IP address from which the systems were accessed.
