An 18-year-old girl from Latur district in Maharashtra allegedly committed suicide to save her father from paying a dowry for her marriage. Her father is a farmer and their financial situation is dismal.

Mohini Bhise, a resident of the impoverished Marathwada region, about 500km from Mumbai, hanged herself at her house on Wednesday.

In her suicide note, the teenager questioned the existence of the social evil despite being banned by law. She also asked her father not to observe any religious rituals after her death.

A villager described Mohini as a bright girl who had scored over 80 percent marks in her Class 12 exam.
