Union Health Minister Briefs President on NEET Ordinance

The minister briefed the President on the Ordinance while his assent is awaited.

• Union Health Minister JP Nadda met President Pranab Mukherjee on Monday to brief him on the Ordinance on the uniform medical entrance examination National Eligibility cum Entrance Test.

• The President was briefed on issues of different exams of state boards, syllabi and regional languages. The President asked Nadda’s ministry to explain why the Ordinance route was taken, keeping state boards out of NEET’s ambit.
  
  
• The Ordinance, cleared by the Union Cabinet on Friday, aims at “partially” overturning a Supreme Court order which said all government colleges, deemed universities and private medical colleges would be covered under NEET. The President’s assent is awaited.
  
  
• The exemption is only for government seats. The state seats earmarked in private medical colleges are exempted, government sources clarified. The next phase of the exam is scheduled for 24 July. Nearly 6.5 lakh students have already taken the medical entrance test in the first phase of NEET held on 1 May.
