Arguing that the growing influence of the BJP and the RSS was being felt in all spheres, singer and Magsaysay award winner TM Krishna tweeted: “Considering the vile comments and threats issued by many on social media regarding Karnatik compositions on Jesus, I announce here that I will be releasing one Karnatik song every month on Jesus or Allah.”

The City Corporation has passed a council resolution to install waste to energy plants at the Kodungaiyur and Perungudi landfills. They also plan to maximise the land use in the two landfills. On implementation, these projects are expected to reduce the amount of waste, which goes to the landfill, by 80 per cent. The 32-megawatt capacity plants will incinerate the waste which reaches the landfill to produce energy. The City Corporation has proposed piggyback engineered landfills (PBELs) to be constructed on top of the existing landfills.

Tamil Nadu has the dubious distinction of topping in terms of value of banking-related crimes so far this financial year, data presented on the last day of the monsoon session of Parliament revealed.
For the period April-June 2018, the amount involved in incidents of robbery/dacoity/burglary/theft in Tamil Nadu is Rs 8.24 crore, according to data sourced from Reserve Bank of India and presented in Parliament. The data was presented by Shiv Pratap Shukla, Minister of State for Finance, in reply to a question on ATM robberies.

J Kumar was appointed as Registrar of Anna University on Friday by Vice-Chancellor M K Surappa. Hitherto, he was serving as Director (Planning and Development) in the university.He replaces S Ganesan, who on an extended tenure in the post, was continuing from the period the university was functioning without a Vice Chancellor for nearly two years.Speaking to Express Surappa said Ganesan had been relieved from the post following the appointment of Kumar. He denied that the appointment had any connection with the recent alleged scams in the university, including the marks-for-cash scam which DVAC is probing.

A section of bus commuters from south Chennai, Ayanavaram, Thiru Vi Ka Nagar, and north Chennai rue that ordinary bus services of Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) are frequently converted into Express and Deluxe buses, forcing them to pay additional ticket fare. While the MTC officials maintained that there is no reduction in ordinary services, the transport corporation refused to divulge the exact number of ordinary bus services operated in Chennai city.

The Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM), founded by actor Kamal Haasan, has appointed 114 party district unit leaders, who would propagate its ideology, initiatives and future plans to the people. They will be the face of the party in their respective units. According to MNM executive council members A.G. Mourya and R. Rangarajan, the party’s ideology is being prepared, which will serve as a blueprint for the office-bearers.
The local office-bearers will also speak about the importance of “empowering people” and explain that the party does not stand for providing freebies or money.

A 40-year-old man who was allegedly abducted by a seven-member gang was rescued by the public, who tried to alert the accused men when they accidentally took an under-construction bridge, near Nemili on Wednesday night.
