  • On Wednesday, the Bombay High Court set aside the Maharashtra government’s order that made the working knowledge of Marathi compulsory for auto-rickshaw permits.
  • The court has termed the circular illegal, saying that the “Government’s emphasis should not only be on the knowledge of language, but also on passengers’ safety.”
  • The BJP-Shiv Sena government in Maharashtra had earlier floated this rule. The notice was circulated in November 2016.
