Houses and Shops Damaged in Post-Poll Violence in Howrah
Trinamool and CPI-M playing blame game regarding post-poll violence in Howrah.
Despite pre-emptive security measures, six houses were damaged and a shop was set on fire in incidents of post - poll violence in West Bengal’s Howrah district on 26 April 2016.
The two main parties – the ruling Trinamool Congress and opposition CPI-M blamed each other for the incidents, which took place just a day after the Assembly polls were held in the district.
Before the start of polling, 90,000 security forces were deployed in West Bengal including state police forces and observers. However, according to reports, 2 men were killed three days ago as the rivalry between the two parties escalated.
Police said that six houses were damaged at Antapur area while CPI-M alleged that the houses belonged to its supporters. The party also claimed the houses were damaged by TMC workers. Police rushed to the area but no one was arrested.
In another incident at Panitras, a shop said to belong to a Trinamool worker was set on fire. Locals doused the fire, police said, adding that no arrests were made in this case either.
