New Delhi, April 1 (IANS) Patidar leader Hardik Patel on Monday moved the Supreme Court seeking the stay of his conviction and sentence in a 2015 rioting case by a district court to enable him to contest the general elections.
The Patidar leader, who joined the Congress on March 12 and was being projected to be a candidate for the Jamnagar seat, has challenged the March 29 Gujarat High Court order rejecting his plea.
The High Court did not accept his plea that an irreparable loss would be caused to him if he was not able to contest Lok Sabha election.
Patel sought the stay of the Mehsana court decision convicting him for involvement in a rioting and arson case at Visnagar during the Patel agitation in 2015.
The Mehsana court had ordered a two-year imprisonment in July last year.
So long as he remains convicted, Hardik Patel stands barred from contesting elections.
