New Delhi, Jan 4 (IANS) Delhi Education Minister Manish Sisodia on Friday welcomed the passage of Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education (Amendment) Bill in Parliament.
In a series of tweets, Sisodia said the introduction of no detention without changing teaching practices, books, evaluation system and proper teachers training was a "bad idea and it is a correct step to scrap it".
He said that the Delhi government was among the first to oppose the no detention policy.
"I welcome the passage of RTE (Amendment) Bill in Parliament which scraps the badly implemented no detention policy till Class 8 students.
"Delhi government was among the first to oppose no detention policy. After taking over as (the) Education Minister in February 2015, I had written to then HRD Minister to restrict it till Class 3," he said.
The Rajya Sabha on Thursday passed the RTE (Amendment) Bill that does away with the no-detention policy.
