Seven people have been arrested by Chhattisgarh Police for an attack on a church in Khamardih area of Raipur, Chhattisgarh.

A mob of around 15 men vandalised a church and attacked church-goers during a mass held on Sunday in Khamardih village.

The president of Chattisgarh’s Christian Forum, Arjun Pannalal alleged that the men were Bajrang Dal activists. He also alleged that the men were wearing saffron bandanas and shouting “Jai Shri Ram” when they barged into the church and started beating people up, including women and children.

Based on the victims’ complaint, a case has been registered under Sections 452 (house-trespass after preparation for hurt), 295 (injuring or defiling place of worship with intent to insult the religion of any class) and 147 (rioting) of the IPC, he said.

Three motorcycles belonging to the accused were seized from the spot, he said, adding efforts are on to nab the miscreants.

Pannalal claimed that Sunday’s incident was the fourth attack on a Christian place of worship in the past one month in the state.

The assailants were heard accusing that people were being converted in the church, he said.
