#GoodNews: Students’ Eco-Friendly ‘Paan’ Stain Remover Wins Award
Eight students of Ramnarain Ruia College in Mumbai found a way of removing tobacco stains from railway coaches.
What would roughly require 60,000 litres of water, litres of acid and crores of money has now been presented with an environment friendly solution.
Eight students of Ramnarain Ruia College in Mumbai’s Matunga have come up with a cost effective and eco-friendly way of removing tobacco stains from railway coaches.
The project was led by Mayuri Rege, a faculty member from the Department of Science and Technology, and was driven by a social media campaign.
The project became a reality with the help of eight students – Aishwarya Rajurkar, Anjali Vaidya, Komal Parab, Maithili Savant, Mitali Patil, Nishtha Pange, Sanika Ambre and Shrutika Sawant.
“The students started a social media drive with the #PaanSePareshan campaign to raise awareness, and they plan to continue with it,” Rege told The Times of India.
According to a report by The Better India, the team has went on to become the only undergraduate college team among 300 entries to receive an award at the Genetically Engineered Machines (iGem) competition held by MIT, Boston.
They were nominated for the ‘Best Project Under Environment’ and a prize for the best presentation. They also won a special award in the ‘Best Integrated Human Practices’ category.
