With Primary Wins, Trump Becomes Presumptive Republican Nominee

US President Donald Trump has won the Florida and Illinois Republican primaries, making him the party's presumptive nominee in the November presidential election.

"Congratulations to Donald J Trump on officially becoming the presumptive Republican nominee for President!" Republican Party chairwoman Ronna McDaniel tweeted on Tuesday.

The 73-year-old White House incumbent did not face any meaningful competition for the Republican nomination and the Florida and Illinois results were a foregone conclusion.

SC Transfers Kafeel Khan Arrest Case to Allahabad HC

The Supreme Court on Wednesday transferred to the Allahabad High Court the case pertaining to Dr Kafeel Khan's arrest by the UP Special Task Force for protesting against CAA.

A plea had been filed seeking a hearing into the case and for his urgent release.

The Supreme Court on Wednesday slammed the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) on its plea seeking 20 years time for recovering dues from telcos in the AGR case.

Justice Arun Mishra said the move is sheer contempt of court.

Koregaon Bhima Inquiry Commission Summons Sharad Pawar as Witness

The Koregaon Bhima Inquiry Commission has summoned NCP chief Sharad Pawar to depose before it as a witness in the 2018 caste-violence case, the panel's lawyer Ashish Satpute said in Pune on Wednesday.

Pawar will have to appear before the commission in Mumbai, as the scheduled hearing by the commission was shifted there in view of coronavirus outbreak.

The hearing, which was scheduled to be held in the last week of March, will now be held between 30 March and 4 April.

Pak Army Shells Forward Areas Along LoC in J&K's Poonch

In the fourth ceasefire violation in as many days, the Pakistan Army on Wednesday resorted to intense mortar shelling on forward areas along the Line of Control (LoC) in Poonch district of Jammu and Kashmir, a defence spokesperson said.

“At about 11:45 am, Pakistan initiated unprovoked ceasefire violation by small arms firing and intense shelling with mortars in Shahpur and Kirni sectors. The Indian Army is retaliating befittingly,” the spokesperson said.

Fire Breaks Out in Under-Construction Building in Mumbai, Doused

A fire occurred on Wednesday at an under-construction building on the DY Patil campus in Navi Mumbai, police said.

Nobody was injured in the incident since the building was unoccupied. The fire engulfed piles of thermocol kept inside the building around 1:30 pm, an official said.

The blaze was doused within 30 minutes by Fire Brigade personnel, he added.

All 5 Rajya Sabha Candidates in West Bengal Elected Unopposed

Four Trinamool Congress candidates and a CPI(M) nominee for the five Rajya Sabha seats in West Bengal were declared elected unopposed on Wednesday, officials said.

Trinamool Congress candidates Arpita Ghosh, Dinesh Trivedi, Subrata Bakshi and Mausam Noor, and CPI(M)'s Bikash Ranjan Bhattacharya, backed by the Congress, were declared elected after the deadline for withdrawal of nomination papers at 3 pm, they said.

After TMC-backed Independent candidate Dinesh Bajaj's nomination was cancelled due to technical reasons on Tuesday, voting scheduled on 26 March was done away with.

6 Candidates from Tamil Nadu Elected Unopposed to Rajya Sabha

All six candidates who filed nominations for six Rajya Sabha seats from Tamil Nadu have been elected. Trichy Siva, NR Elango and Anthiyur Selavraj from DMK and KP Munusamy, M Thambidurai from AIADMK and GK Vasan from Tamil Maanila Congress have been elected to the upper House.

Congress leaders Phoolo Devi Netam and KTS Tulsi have been elected unopposed to Rajya Sabha from Chhattisgarh.

BJP's Indu Goswami Elected to Rajya Sabha from Himachal Pradesh

Former state president of the BJP's Mahila Morcha, Indu Goswami was on Wednesday elected to Rajya Sabha from Himachal Pradesh.

Goswami, 52, was declared as elected unopposed by Himachal Pradesh Assembly secretary Yash Paul Sharma.

All 5 Rajya Sabha candidates in Bihar elected unopposed

All five candidates for as many Rajya Sabha seats in Bihar were on Wednesday declared elected unopposed as no other nominations were filed, an official said.

Bihar assembly secretary-cum-returning officer Bateshwar Nath Pandey told PTI that certificates were handed over to all the five candidates after the deadline for withdrawal of nomination papers at 3 pm.

Two candidates each were from the Janata Dal (United) (JD(U)) and the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), and one from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Since no other candidate had filed nomination papers, the voting, which was scheduled on 26 March, was done away with.

DAC Clears Procurement of 83 Tejas Aircraft for IAF: Report

The Defence Acquisition Council on Wednesday cleared procurement of 83 advanced version of Tejas aircraft, sources told PTI.

The Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) paved the way for procurement of 83 of the more advanced Mk1A version of the aircraft from Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) by finalising the contractual and other issues, they said.

An order of 40 Tejas aircraft had been placed with the Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd in initial configurations.

Two nominees of the BJP and its ally BPF and an independent candidate, backed by the Congress and AIUDF, for the three Rajya Sabha seats in Assam were declared elected unopposed on Wednesday.

Sitting Bodo Peoples' Front (BPF) MP Biswajit Daimary, BJP's Bhubaneswar Kalita and Congress-AIUDF supported independent candidate Ajit Bhuyan were elected to the upper house of Parliament on the last day of withdrawal of nomination papers on Wednesday, Returning Officer Amarendra Narayan Deka said.

1 dead, 1 Hurt in St Patrick's Day Shooting at Texas Pub

One woman was killed and another injured in a shooting on St Patrick's Day at an Irish pub in southeast Texas.

The shooting happened Tuesday night at Molly's Irish Sports Pub in Corpus Christi and a suspect is in custody, police spokesman Travis Pace said.

When officers arrived, they found one woman dead and another who had been shot in the torso, the Corpus Christi Caller Times reported. Police interviewed witnesses and identified a suspect, who was later arrested after a brief foot chase, Pace said.
