France Fines Apple $1.2 Billion for Anti-Competitive Acts

French regulators fined Apple 1.1 billion euros (USD 1.2 billion) on Monday, 16 March, for striking deals to keep prices high, in the biggest-ever such sanction by France’s Competition Authority.

The agency said Apple and top re-sellers agreed to align prices with Apple’s own pricing for its iPads and some other products. The deals did not concern iPhones.

Calling the fine “disheartening,” Apple defended its operations in a statement saying its “investment and innovation supports over 240,000 jobs across the country.”

TMC-Backed Independent Nominee's RS Candidature Gets Cancelled

The nomination of Dinesh Bajaj, an Independent candidate supported by the ruling TMC for the Rajya Sabha polls from Bengal, was cancelled by the returning officer as his affidavit was not in proper format.

"My nomination for Rajya Sabha poll as an Independent candidate has been cancelled as my affidavit was not notarized," Bajaj told reporters.

With the rejection of Bajaj's nomination, the rest five candidates--four of the TMC and one of the CPI(M)- Congress combine-- will sail through without a contest.

MV Rao New DGP of Jharkhand

The 1987 batch IPS officer M V Rao on Tuesday took over as the new Director-General of Police of Jharkhand. He replaced Kamal Nayan Choubey.

Choubey, a 1986 batch IPS officer, has been transferred to Delhi as Officer on Special Duty (Modernisation-camp, Delhi) on Monday, an official release said.

Maharashtra to Merge International Board with SSC-HSC Education Board

The Maharashtra government on Tuesday decided to merge the international board with the state secondary and higher secondary educational board.

A statement from the chief minister's office said the merger decision was taken to ensure quality education for all children. It said the government was of the view that there should not be two examination boards.

As per the new education policy, the State Council for Education Research and Training will prepare a curriculum of international standards, the release said.

Suspect Killed, 2 Officers Grazed in Atlanta Shooting

Atlanta police killed an armed suspect near one of the city's most famous parks in a shooting on Tuesday morning, authorities said.

Two officers suffered minor injuries.

The shooting occurred near Piedmont Park in the city's Midtown neighborhood, the police department tweeted.

4 Children Burnt to Death After House Catches Fire in Rajasthan's Churu

Four children were charred to death when a thatched house caught fire in Rajasthan's Churu district on Tuesday, police said.

The incident occurred in Sadarshahar area in which two girls and as many boys died, said Station House Officer, Sardarshaha, Mahendra Sharma.

Police said Ajay (5), his brother Devaram (3) and their cousin sisters Shivani (3) and Manisha (4) were burnt to death after the house caught fire.

A probe is underway to ascertain the cause of fire, Sharma added.

China Expels Several Us Journalists in Biggest Crackdown in Years

China on Wednesday, 18 March, expelled American journalists at the New York Times, the Washington Post and the Wall Street Journal in the Communist government's most severe move against foreign media in recent memory.

The foreign ministry said in a statement the measure was in retaliation for Washington's decision to cut the number of Chinese nationals allowed to work for Chinese state-run media on American soil.

5 Killed in West Bengal Car Accident

Five members of a family were killed and three others injured in a car accident in Kalimpong, West Bengal on Tuesday. 17 March, ANI reported. Injured have been shifted to the hospital.
