Apple Delivers Best-Ever Quarter, Powered by iPhones, Services

Apple has posted record results for the final three months of last year, delivering gains in sales of iPhones even as the company transitions to digital services and wearables.

Net profit hit an all-time high of USD 22 billion on record quarterly revenue of USD 91.8 billion, the California tech giant said of the results which were far stronger than most analyst estimates.

"We are thrilled to report Apple's highest quarterly revenue ever, fuelled by strong demand for our iPhone 11 and iPhone 11 Pro models, and all-time records for services and wearables," said Apple chief executive Tim Cook.

Sena Slams Centre for Handing Elgar Parishad Case to NIA

Attacking the Centre for handing over the probe into the sensitive Elgar Parishad case to the NIA, the Shiv Sena on Wednesday, 29 January invoked federalism in the country and accused the Modi government of "interfering" in the affairs of "non-BJP" Maharashtra.

Questioning the sudden move, the Sena, which heads the Maha Vikas Aghadi government comprising the NCP and the Congress, asked whether the Centre wanted the "truth" in the case to remain uncovered.

New Zealand Volcano Death Toll Rises to 21 Wellington

The death toll from New Zealand's White Island volcano eruption climbed to 21 on Wednesday, 29 January with a further death in hospital more than a month after the tragedy, police said.

Deputy police commissioner John Tims said the person died in hospital in Auckland, without releasing further details.

Nineteen of the victims had died in New Zealand and two in Australia.

Syria Army Retakes Key Northwest Town Damascus

Syria government forces on Wednesday, 29 January recaptured the onetime protest town of Maaret al-Numan from jihadist and allied rebels, the army said, returning for the first time in seven years.

"Our forces managed in the past few days to stamp out terrorism in many villages and towns," including Maaret al-Numan, a spokesman said in a televised statement.

Major Fire at Dumping Ground in Kalyan

A major fire engulfed a large dumping ground in Kalyan town in Thane district of Maharashtra on Wednesday afternoon, a fire officer said.

The fire erupted at around 1:30 pm on the Aadharwadi dumping ground and spread rapidly in the radius of one km due to wind, he said.

No casualties are reported in the incident.

Man Arrested for Killing 14-Year-Old Boy in J&K's Kathua

he police have arrested a man for allegedly killing a 14-year-old boy in Kathua district of Jammu and Kashmir, officials said on Wednesday.

Sahil Kumar was found murdered with grievous injuries on his head, face and throat in the bushes of Pandhrar village on January 19, hours after his father lodged a missing person report at the Kathua police station, a police spokesperson said.

European Parliament Ratifies Brexit Deal, Sealing UK Exit

The European Parliament on Wednesday voted overwhelmingly to approve the Brexit deal with London, clearing the final hurdle for Britain's departure from the EU.

The vote at the parliament in Brussels, which came after an emotional debate, was passed by 621 to 49, prompting MEPs to burst into a chorus of "Auld Lang Syne", a traditional Scottish song of farewell.
