Record Southeastern Brazil Rainstorms Kill 30

At least 30 people have been killed by intense storms in southeastern Brazil, the Civil Defense office in Minas Gerais state said on Saturday.

The toll was a jump from the 11 reported by the same office earlier in the day.

Seventeen people are also missing, seven injured, and some 3,500 have been forced to move in more following a series of landslides and house collapses, Civil Defense officials said.

Israel Strikes in Gaza in Response to Incendiary Balloons

Israel carried out air raids on Hamas targets in the Gaza Strip late Saturday, in response to the launching of incendiary devices attached to balloons sent over from the Palestinian enclave, the army said.

"A short while ago, combat planes hit a number of targets of the Hamas terrorist organisation in the southern Gaza Strip," the military said in a statement.

Among the targets was an arms factory, the army added, stressing that the air raids were in response to the launching of the incendiary balloons towards Israeli territory.

Turkey Quake Death Toll Rises to 31

The death toll from a powerful earthquake which struck eastern Turkey rose to 31, officials said Sunday, as rescue efforts continued.

The magnitude 6.8 quake hit on Friday evening, with its epicentre in the small lakeside town of Sivrice in Elazig province but also affected neighbouring cities and countries.

The Turkish government's disaster and emergency management agency (AFAD) said 31 people died, the majority in Elazig but at least four in nearby Malatya, and 1,607 were injured.

Bengaluru Traffic Cop Who Caught 680 Drunken Drivers Gets President’s Police Medal

Among the 19 police officers from Karnataka who were conferred with the President’s Police Medal for Meritorious Service on Republic Day is a traffic cop from Bengaluru who caught 680 drunk drivers during his five-year-long service in the traffic division.

Presently posted as an assistant sub-inspector at Basavangudi police station, K Venkatesh, 50, was among the 14 traffic cops from across the country.

Fifteen Gendarmes Killed in Attack on Mali Camp: Source

Fifteen members of Mali's security forces died in a jihadist assault on Sunday, 26 January, at a camp in the centre of the country, military and local sources said.

"At least 15 Malian military were killed Sunday in the Sokolo military camp during an attack by terrorists," a Malian military source told AFP.

"The military killed were all gendarmes," a local lawmaker said.

Tiger Mauls to Death Man, Cow in MP’s Umaria

A tiger mauled to death a man and his cow in Umaria district in Madhya Pradesh on Sunday, 26 January, a forest department official said.

The incident happened in Akamaniha village, some 40 kilometres from the district headquarters, close to the Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserve, he added.

"Narbad Singh (35) was grazing his cow near the forest when a tiger attacked them. Before villagers could come to their rescue, the tiger had killed them both. It fled into the forest after a crowd descended on the spot," said Nourojabad police station inspector Rakesh Uike.
