Court Sentences Nine in Nari Niketan Rape Case

A Dehradun court has sentenced the main accused in the rape and abortion case of a hearing and speech impaired inmate at a government-run shelter home here in 2015 to seven years in prison.

UN Rights Investigator on Myanmar Lambasts Suu Kyi

Myanmar's civilian leader Aung San Suu Kyi has washed her hands of the Rohingya crisis, a UN rights investigator said on Tuesday ahead of a meeting between South Korea's President Moon Jae-in and the tarnished democracy icon.

Yanghee Lee, a university professor in Seoul who is the United Nations Special Rapporteur on human rights to Myanmar, said Suu Kyi was "terribly misguided and misinformed" about the abuses against the stateless Muslim minority in her country.

Aasia Bibi Calls for Reform in Pak's 'Harsh' Blasphemy Law

Aasia Bibi, a Pakistani Christian woman who was freed from death row by the Supreme Court in a high-profile sacrilege case last year that polarised the society, has called for reforms in the country's “harsh” blasphemy law, according to a media report.

Bibi was the first woman to be sentenced to death under Pakistan's controversial blasphemy laws. Under Pakistan's penal code, the offence of blasphemy is punishable by death or life imprisonment.

Bibi said that it was important for the world to know that there are many cases in Pakistan where people were alleged of blasphemy without any proper investigation or proof, the Sunday Telegraph reported.

Body Found off UK Cliffs Believed to Be of BJP Leader's Son, Says Police

The body of a man found off a cliff in the south-east of England is believed to be that of the missing son of a Telangana BJP leader who was studying in London, according to police.

Ujwal Sriharsha Sanne, the son of Khammam district BJP president Sanne Uday Pratap, had been missing for a few days and a large-scale search was launched for the 24-year-old assisted by a police helicopter. A body was recovered on Sunday at Beachy Head, a chalk headland cliffs in East Sussex country of England, a landmark which is infamous as a suicide spot in the UK.

"The body of a man was discovered at Beachy Head at 10pm on Sunday, which is believed to be that of missing 24-year-old Ujwal Sanne from London," a Sussex Police spokesperson said on Tuesday, adding that the matter has been passed to the Coroner's Officer and next of kin have been informed.

Two Thrashed on Suspicion of Child Lifting in UP's Bhadohi

Two people taken for child lifters were thrashed in the Gopiganj police station area in Uttar Pradesh’s Bhadohi on Tuesday, officials said.

In the first incident, labourer Shiv Kumar Yadav was beaten up at Beraspur village and was handed over police, Superintendent of Police Ram Badan Singh said.

In a similar incident, one Babbu Singh was beaten up at Sarai Jagdish when he tried to drag a seven year-old-girl, the SP said.

EU Says UK Has yet to Show Plan to Revise Brexit Deal

Britain has made no concrete proposals on revising the Brexit agreement, and the prospect of a divorce without a deal remains "a very distinct possibility", the EU said on Tuesday.

A spokeswoman for the European Commission said "technical talks" were continuing on the diplomatic process but she had no progress on substance to report.

The comments came as Prime Minister Boris Johnson insists he will take Britain out the bloc with or without a deal on 31 October and rebel British MPs try to stop him.

Russian Blogger Sentenced to Five Years over 'Extremist' Tweet

A Russian court on Tuesday sentenced a blogger to five years in a penal colony for a tweet calling for attacks on the children of police, a ruling his lawyer said was unprecedented.

Vladislav Sinitsa, 30, posted the tweets in the wake of a police crackdown against protesters who have called for free elections.

"It's an act of intimidation," said lawyer Denis Tikhonov after a Moscow district court found Sinitsa guilty of inciting hatred.

The charges fall under Russia's harsh anti-extremism legislation. Tikhonov told AFP the sentence was "without precedent in its severity".

Bangladesh Bans Cellphone Services in Rohingya Camps

Bangladesh's telecommunications regulatory body has asked operators to shut down cellphone services in sprawling camps in the southeast where hundreds of thousands of Rohingya refugees from Myanmar live, an official told news agency AP, citing a security threat.

Zakir Hossain Khan, a spokesman for the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission, said on Tuesday they asked the operators to reply to the order within seven days.

CRPF IG Raj Kumar Gets 1-Year Extension

CRPF IG Raj Kumar was on Tuesday given a one year extension in relaxation of IPS tenure policy, according to an official order.

Kumar is a 1995 batch IPS officer of the Uttar Pradesh cadre.

The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved the proposal of the Ministry of Home Affairs for extension of deputation tenure of Kumar as CRPF IG for a period of one year beyond 10 August 2019 in relaxation of IPS tenure policy, the order stated.

SC Seeks Revised Plan from NBCC on Completing Stalled Jaypee Group Projects

The Supreme Court on Tuesday sought to know from state-owned NBCC whether it is willing to give a revised proposal to complete the stalled projects of cash-strapped Jaypee group even as the Centre said it has to step in because "a mess has been created by the promoter".

The top court said if NBCC, whose two proposals have been rejected earlier by lenders of the defaulting Jaypee group, is not willing to submit a revised plan, then it may look for other alternatives.

Four Killed, 3 Injured in Fire at ONGC Plant; Operations Unaffected

Four people were killed and three seriously injured when a fire broke out at an oil and gas processing plant of ONGC at Navi Mumbai township, a top official and the police said.

Those killed include three personnel of the Central Industrial Security Force, which is responsible for the security of the Uran plant of Oil and Natural Gas Corp (ONGC). The fourth was an employee of ONGC.

Officials said the three injured are also CISF personnel.

Two Students Shot at in UP's Modinagar College

Two students of Multani Mal Modi Degree college in Modinagar were injured after being shot at by a former student on Tuesday, police said.

Sumit, a third year student of Bachelor of Arts and Nikhil were injured in the incident and taken to Meerut for treatment, police said.

The accused - Sagar Singh, a native of Dhindhar village wanted to terrorise some students of the college, Superintendent of Police (rural) Neeraj Kumar said.
