8 Killed in Rocket Attack on Baghdad Airport: Iraqi Security Sources

At least eight people were killed in a rocket attack on Baghdad airport, Iraqi security sources said on Friday, days after a pro-Iran mob laid siege to the American embassy.

"Three rockets hit the international airport in Baghdad," said a statement from the Iraqi military, adding that two cars exploded.

At least eight people died, added a security official who asked to remain anonymous.

Oil Prices Soar More Than 4% After Iranian General Killed

Oil prices soared more than four per cent Friday following claims that the US had killed a top Iranian general, ratcheting up tensions between the foes and fuelling fears of a conflict in the crude-rich region.

The head of Iran's Quds Force, Qasem Soleimani, was hit in an attack on Baghdad international airport early Friday, according to Hased, a powerful Iraqi paramilitary force linked to Tehran.

Brent surged 4.4 per cent to USD 69.16 and WTI jumped 4.3 per cent to 63.84.

Taiwan Grounds Black Hawks After Crash Killed Top Personnel Taipei

Taiwan grounded its fleet of Black Hawk helicopters after a crash killed the island's top military officer and other prominent personnel.

The official Central News Agency said Friday all 52 of the UH-60M aircraft belonging to the air force, army and National Airborne Service Corps have ceased flight operations while they are inspected for any problems with their structural, software, radar and other systems.

The one that crashed Thursday morning in forested mountains outside the capital was a model dedicated to search and rescue and had been delivered in 2018, according to the defense ministry.

The crash killed eight people including former air force Gen. Shen Yi-ming, who had taken over as chief of the general staff in July.

Australian PM Scott Morrison Inclined to Cancel India Visit

Australia Prime Minister Scott Morrison on Friday said he was inclined to cancel an official trip to India planned for this month in order to deal with a bushfire crisis ravaging parts of his country.

Asked by reporters if it was appropriate to leave Australia given the situation, Morrison said he was "inclined not to proceed" with the visit.

Shopkeeper Held With Gutka, Tobacco Products Worth Lakhs

A 19-year-old shopkeeper has been arrested for allegedly storing banned gutka and tobacco products worth Rs 8.90 lakh in Boisar town of Maharashtra's Palghar district, police said on Friday.

Acting on a tip-off, the police on Wednesday raided the paan shop of Afaullah Akhilur Rehman Shaikh and seized gutka and tobacco-based products of various brands worth Rs 8.90 lakh, an official said.

The accused was arrested on Thursday and has been charged with offenses under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and Food and Drug Administration's regulations.

Odisha Govt Asks Collectors to Ensure Aadhaar Seeding With Pension Schemes

The Odisha government has asked the district collectors to ensure Aadhaar seeding with social security pension schemes Madhu Babu Pension Yojana (MBPY) and National Social Assistance Programme (NSAP) by March 15, officials said on Friday.

In a letter to all the collectors, the Department of Social Security and Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities said, "Starting from 01.04.2020, pension under NSAP/MBPY will not be disbursed without Aadhaar."

Ghosn Seen on Security Camera Leaving Tokyo Home Alone

Fugitive former Nissan boss Carlos Ghosn was caught on a security camera leaving his Tokyo home by himself on the day he is thought to have fled to avoid a Japanese trial, local media reported Friday.

He is thought to have taken a private jet from Kansai Airport in western Japan on that day, heading for Istanbul. It is believed Ghosn headed from there to Beirut.

The news comes a day after prosecutors raided the residence as part of an initial probe into his flight.

Ghosn, who faced multiple charges of financial misconduct that he denies, won bail in April but with strict conditions -- including a ban on overseas travel and living under surveillance.

Resignation of Allahabad University VC Accepted

The resignation of Allahabad University Vice Chancellor Ratan Lal Hangloo, who was under the scanner over alleged financial and administrative irregularities, has been accepted, officials said Friday.

“His resignation was sent by the HRD Ministry to Rashtrapati Bhawan and it has been approved,” officials told PTI.

Hangloo had resigned on Wednesday.

He was under the scanner since 2016 over irregularities. Hangloo was also summoned by the National Commission for Women (NCW) last week over allegations of improper handling of sexual harassment complaints and lack of grievance redressal mechanism for female students.

TV Actress 'Molested' in City on New Year's Eve, One Held Kolkata

An app-based taxi driver has been arrested for allegedly harassing and molesting a television actress on the New Year's eve in the city, police said on Friday.

The actress informed the Kolkata Police about the incident by dialling 100 on Tuesday night, they said. Based on her complaint, the police arrested the driver on Thursday, a senior officer said.

The woman alleged that the driver had cancelled the trip moments after she got into the taxi at Ultadanga area in the city, he said.

She also alleged that the driver was drunk and tried to speed the vehicle without paying heed to her pleas to stop, the officer said.

NCLAT Reserves Order on RoC Plea in Tata-Mistry Case

The National Company Law Appellate Tribunal (NCLAT) on Friday reserved its order on the plea filed by the Registrar of Companies (RoC) seeking modifications in the judgement in which Cyrus Mistry was reinstated as the executive chairman of Tata Sons.

A two-member bench headed by Chairman Justice S J Mukhopadhaya indicated that its order is likely to come on Monday next week.

During the proceedings, the Ministry of Corporate Affairs said that it was discharging its duty and has not committed any illegality in conversion of Tata Sons from public company to a private company.

President Rajapaksa Inaugurates Lanka Parliament Colombo

Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa on Friday emphasised on stronger ties with all countries and outlined his government's vision as he inaugurated the fourth sessions of the parliament, a month after he prorogued the House following his victory in the presidential elections.

The parliament was to meet on December 3, but President Rajapaksa prorogued it for one month and fixed January 3 for the commencement of the next session.

Jharkhand: ED Attaches Assets Worth Rs 1.66 Crore in Ponzi Scam Case

According to the ED, assets worth Rs 1.66 crore have been attached under the anti-money laundering law in connection with an alleged chit fund or ponzi scam case in Jharkhand. The case pertains to cheating and siphoning off the public money by alluring gullible investors of offering handsome returns periodically on their investment.

Enforcement Directorate in a statement mentioned that the scam was allegedly perpetrated by a group of people "conspiring" with other accused to cheat investors by developing a software in the name of a company, DJN Commodities, for offline trading.

Nitin Gadkari Slams Maha Tripartite Alliance

Union minister and senior BJP leader Nitin Gadkari on Friday, 3 January, said that the alliance between the Shiv Sena, Congress and NCP in Maharashtra was just for the sake of power and warned the three parties that people of the state did not like such "unnatural alliances".

Akhilesh Yadav Slams Yogi Adityanath

Amid a political storm over infant deaths in Rajasthan's Kota, Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav on Friday, 3 January, alleged that over a thousand children have died in the last 12 months in Gorakhpur and asked the UP government as to who was responsible for it.

Training his guns on the UP Chief Minister, Akhilesh Yadav said, "Yogi Adityanath is worried about Kota deaths. When will he be worried about the Gorakhpur deaths".

Yadav told a press conference here that the ailing children in Gorakhpur were suffering from encephalitis but were administered different medicines so that the truth did not come out that they were dying of encephalitis.

Union Minister Babul Supriyo Refuses to Apologise

A verbal spat has erupted between union minister Babul Supriyo and a Muslim college student in which Supriyo threatened on social media to pack off the youth to "his own country" for his post seeking to know the BJP MP's "education level".

The student, Mustafizur Rahman said on Friday, 3 January, that he wanted nothing but an "unconditional apology" in public from the BJP leader.

The union minister returned the fire by accusing Rahman of being a "serial offender" hitting back the Union Minister stated that he does not need to apologize to fools.

The matter came to light on December 26 when Supriyo shared a post on the social media advocating CAA.

Mumbai: Man Held for Molesting Minor

A 23-year-old man was arrested for allegedly molesting a girl in suburban Pantnagar, Mumbai, the city police said on Friday.

As per the police official the incident took place on Thursday evening when the girl, who is 12 years old, was returning home from a market.

Accused Salim Babu Shaikh, who lives in the same locality, accosted her and took her to an isolated place where he allegedly showed her a porn clip and molested her.

The girl told her parents about the incident, following which they filed a police complaint, the official said.

Man Shot and Killed After Stabbing Passers-By in Paris Suburb: Police

A man was shot and killed by officers on Friday after stabbing passers-by at a park in a suburb south of Paris, police and sources close to the inquiry said.

The man had attacked "several people" in a park in Villejuif before he was "neutralised," the Paris police department said.

Sources told AFP two people were injured in the attack and the assailant killed.

1 Dead, 3 Hurt in 'Stabbing Incident' in Downtown Austin

One person was killed and three others hurt in a reported "stabbing incident" Friday morning in downtown Austin and a suspect was in custody, police and emergency officials said.

Austin-Travis County EMS said a man in his 20s was pronounced dead and a man in his 50s was taken to a hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Two others were being treated on the scene on South Congress Avenue.

Austin police said a suspect was in custody and that "no other known suspects are outstanding" but it wasn't immediately clear whether the suspect was among the injured or what led to the stabbings.

Paris Police Shoot Man Who Attacked Passers-By With Knife

A man armed with a knife attacked passers-by Friday in a southern Paris park, injuring some, before being shot by police, French officials said.

A local mayor said one person was killed and several injured in the afternoon attack, but police couldn't immediately confirm the death or the number of injured people.

The mayor, Vincent Jeanbrun, told broadcaster BFM-TV that the attacker assaulted people in a park in Villejuif, then fled to a shopping center in his area, L'Hay-les-Roses, and was shot by police there.

Private Trainer Aircraft Crashes in MP's Sagar, Two Killed

A trainer aircraft of a private aviation academy crashed in Sagar district of Madhya Pradesh on Friday night, killing two persons who were on board, the district police said.

The pilot of the aircraft of 'Chimes Academy' was trying to land at Dhana airstrip when it crashed in the adjoining field, said Sagar Superintendent of Police Amit Sanghi.
