Lebanon Army Says 16 Held After Night of Unrest

Lebanon's army said on Wednesday it detained 16 people during a third night of violence across the country, as tensions rose following more than 40 days of unprecedented protests.

Clashes erupted on Tuesday evening in Tripoli, the northern port city where protests have maintained momentum since anti-government demonstrations began on 17 October.

12,000 Litres of Petrol Spills as Fuel Tanker Overturns in Kerala

A petrol tanker overturned at Vatakara near here on Thursday spilling 12,000 litres of fuel on the road, police said.

The incident occurred at around 5:30 am and left the driver of the truck injured, they said.

"Fire engines reached the spot and we have contained the situation.... The tanker had 12,000 litres of fuel... all the fuel has been spilled," a fireman in the rescue team told PTI.

According to police, the truck carrying Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) fuel hit a road roller before turning turtle.

Ministry Forms Expert Committee to Review Sports Code

Olympic bronze-medallist shooter Gagan Narang, former football captain Bhaichung Bhutia and national badminton coach Pulella Gopichand have been named in a 13-member expert committee formed by the Sports Ministry to review the controversial Draft National Sports Code 2017.

Besides the trio, the committee will also have World Championships bronze-medallist long jumper Anju Bobby George. The expert committee will be headed by Supreme Court judge Justice (Retd) Mukundakam Sharma as its chairman.

The panel will also feature a representative from the Indian Olympic Association (IOA), which has rejected the document in current form as it seeks to put an age and tenure cap on sports administrators.

Eight Children Among 15 Civilians Killed by Mine in Afghanistan: Govt

Fifteen civilians, including eight children, were killed on Wednesday when their vehicle hit a land mine in Kunduz province in northern Afghanistan, a government official said.

"At around 5:00 pm this evening a mine planted by the Taliban terrorists hit a civilian car... killing 15 civilians and wounding two more," said Nasrat Rahimi, an interior ministry spokesman.

Six women and a man were also among those killed in the blast in Kunduz, on the country's northern border with Tajikistan, Rahimi said.

No group has claimed responsibility for the blast. It was also unclear if it was a targeted attack. However there are regular clashes in the region between the Taliban insurgents and US-backed Afghan forces.

BJP MP Pragya Thakur Removed From Parliamentary Panel on Defence

BJP MP Pragya Singh Thakur has been removed from the 21-member Parliamentary Consultative Committee of the Ministry of Defence, ANI reports.

The Bhopal MP is an accused in the Malegaon blasts case. However, she was granted bail by the Bombay High Court on health grounds in 2017.

UN Says Armed Attackers in Eastern Congo Kill Ebola Responders

The head of the World Health Organization has said that attacks by armed groups in eastern Congo have killed workers responding to the Ebola outbreak.

He did not say how many people have been killed in the attacks in Biakato Mines and Mangina.

In his statement on Thursday, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said: “We are heartbroken that our worst fears have been realized.”

The attacks come after days of deadly unrest in the city of Beni, where residents, outraged by repeated rebel attacks, stormed the local United Nations peacekeeping base.

Eight Iraq Protesters Killed in Clashes: Medics, Security Sources

At least eight Iraqi protesters were shot dead on Thursday in clashes with security forces in the southern city of Nasiriyah amid a crackdown on anti-government unrest, medical and security sources said.

Around 50 others more wounded, several in critical condition, when security forces tried to retake two bridges in the city that had been blocked by the protesters, the sources said.

Southern Iraq and the capital Baghdad have been gripped by nearly two months of rallies demanding a deep-rooted overhaul of the ruling system, seen by protesters as corrupt and inefficient.

TMC Wins Kaliaganj, Kharagpur Sadar Seats in WB Assembly Bypolls

Trinamool Congress (TMC) candidate Pradip Sarkar has won the Kharagpur Sadar assembly by-election by 20,811 votes. The seat was previously held by BJP State President Dilip Ghosh.

Tapan Deb Sinha of the TMC won the Kaliaganj seat by defeating his nearest rival Kamal Chandra Sarkar of the BJP by 2,304 votes, EC officials told PTI.

North Korea Fires 'Unidentified Projectile': Seoul

North Korea fired an "unidentified projectile" on Thursday -- the Thanksgiving holiday in the US -- Seoul said, as nuclear talks between Pyongyang and Washington remain deadlocked.

The one-line announcement from the South's Joint Chiefs of Staff did not immediately provide further details and came shortly after 3:00 am in Washington, DC on one of the US' biggest annual holidays.

Class XII Female Student Shot Dead in MP Town

A 19-year-old female student of Class XII was allegedly shot dead by three unidentified motorcycle-borne assailants when she was returning home from her coaching classes in Porsa town, about 50 kms from the district headquarters, police said on Thursday.

The incident occurred on Wednesday evening, following which the angry relatives of the victim and some local residents staged a protest and allegedly hurled stones at police vehicles.

"Three unidentified motorcycle-borne persons shot Anjali Rathore, a Class XII student, multiple times. The incident took place on Jotai Road when she was returning home along with her friend after attending classes at a coaching centre," Porsa police station in-charge Siddharth Priyadarshan said.

Online Ponzi: Ed Attaches Rs 8.82-Cr Assets of Noida-Based Firm

A Noida-based multi-level marketing firm's assets worth over Rs 8 crore have been attached in connection with an alleged online ponzi fraud case, the federal agency said.

A provisional order under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) has been issued by the Enforcement Directorate against the company — Webwork Trade Link Pvt Ltd.

A Special Court in Delhi has issued summons to Delhi BJP Chief Manoj Tiwari and other BJP leaders in connection with a defamation complaint filed by Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia, for leveling allegations of corruption in government schools.

Apart from Tiwari, Pravesh Verma, Hans Raj Hans, Vijender Gupta and Harish Khurana have been summoned as accused by the Court. All of them need to appear before the court on 18 December.

Turkey: 2 Soldiers Killed in Mortar Fire From Syria

A mortar attack targeting a Turkish military post near the border with Syria has killed two soldiers, Turkey's defense ministry said.

The ministry said Turkish artillery units immediately returned fire across the border into northeastern Syria after the attack , which took place Wednesday evening near the Turkish town of Akcakale. It added that “operations” in the area were continuing.

Pak SC Grants 6 Months Extension to Army Chief Bajwa

Pakistan's Supreme Court granted six-month conditional extension to Army chief Gen Qamar Javed Bajwa, in a relief to Prime Minister Imran Khan's government.

A three-member bench of the apex court, headed by Chief Justice Asif Saeed Khan Khosa and comprising Justices Mazhar Alam Khan Miankhel and Mansoor Ali Shah, in its short order directed the government to bring necessary legislation within six months' time, Geo TV reported.
