Hong Kong Arrests 36 in Latest Protest

Hong Kong police drew their guns and fired a warning shot on the night of Sunday, 25 August, after protesters attacked officers with sticks and rods, and brought out water cannon trucks for the first time, an escalation in the summerlong protests that have shaken the city's government and residents.

Police said that they arrested 36 people, including a 12-year-old, for offenses such as unlawful assembly, possession of an offensive weapon and assaulting police officers.

Three Killed, Three Injured in Lightning Strikes in Odisha

At least three farmers were killed and three others injured when they were struck by lightning in separate incidents in Odisha's Cuttack and Kendrapara districts on Sunday, 25 August, police said.

While two persons were killed and three injured in separate incidents of lightning strikes in Cuttack's Mahanga, another person was fatally struck by lightning in Kendrapara's Mahakalapada area, a police officer said.

All the deceased and injured were working in agriculture fields during the strikes, he said.

Nine Injured in Clash over Property Dispute in UP

Nine people were injured in stone-pelting during a clash between two groups over a property dispute, police said on Monday, 26 August.

The incident took place on Sunday evening in Sarvat locality, which comes under the jurisdiction of Civil Lines police station, they said.

Two men, Amerpal and Asgar, got into a confrontation over a property dispute, which turned into a violent clash after other joined the melee, SHO Samerpal Atri said.

Thirty pilgrims were injured after their bus overturned and fell into a ditch in UP’s Muzaffarnagar, police said on Monday, 26 August.

The bus carrying 50 pilgrims was on its way to Rajasthan's Bagar from Bijnor when the accident took place on the Pinna bypass road here on Sunday, they said.

Four of a Family Found Dead in Maharashtra’s Ahmednagar

Four members of a family, including two minors, were found dead on Monday morning in Maharashtra's Ahmednagar district, police said.

Babaji Badhe (41), his wife Kavita (35), their sons Aditya (15) and Dhananjay (13) were found hanging from an iron rod in their home in Gunore village in Parner tehsil, said sub-divisional police officer (SDPO) Ajit Patil.

“Neighbours alerted the police. We believe Babaji, a farmer, killed his wife and sons and then committed suicide. Further probe is underway,” Patil said.

Man Tries Self-Immolation at Haryana CM's 'Jan Ashirwad Yatra'

A man attempted self-immolation in Rathdhana village of Sonipat district on Monday when Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar's 'Jan Ashirwad Yatra' was passing through the area.

The man, who identified himself as Rajesh, told reporters that he took the step because his son was jobless despite being “assured” a job when he met the chief minister earlier.

Sonipat Superintendent of Police Pratiksha Godhara told PTI that the Yatra was nearing a halt in Sonipat district when the man sprinkled some inflammable material nearby and set himself on fire.

Haryana Minister and BJP MLA from Sonipat, Kavita Jain said that when the yatra reached the village, they saw a man engulfed in flames after which security officials were asked to rush to his help.

"I was on board the yatra bus when we saw the man in flames. Four more persons also sustained burn injuries in the incident. The seriously injured person has been referred to PGIMS hospital at Rohtak, while the other four are undergoing treatment in Sonipat civil hospital," Jain, the urban local bodies and women and child development minister, said.

Pilot Being Searched as Spain Military Plane Crashes at Sea

A Spanish military plane crashed on Monday off the southeastern coast and rescue services were searching for the pilot who ejected, the defence ministry said.

The C-101 - the same aircraft used by Spain's air force Eagle Patrol aerobatics team - was on a "training flight" when it crashed near the resort of La Manga, a statement said.

On board was a flight instructor who “was able to eject before the plane crashed in the sea”.

3 Injured in Blast Outside Pak Consulate in Afghanistan

Pakistan has said that at least three persons, including a policeman, were injured in a blast outside its Consulate General in the volatile Jalalabad city in Afghanistan.

Foreign Office spokesman Mohammad Faisal said an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) exploded outside the consulate in Jalalabad.

“IED exploded outside holding area of our Consulate General in Jalalabad. All Pakistani staff are safe. One policeman and two applicants are reportedly wounded,” he said in a tweet.

“We are in contact with Afghan authorities to ensure strengthened security for Consulate General's premises and personnel,” Faisal said.

No outfit has taken responsibility of the attack.

Last Date to File GST Annual Returns Extended till 30 Nov

The finance ministry on Monday said the last date for filing annual GST returns has been extended by three months to 30 November as taxpayers were facing technical problems in furnishing returns.

"It is hereby informed that the last date for furnishing of annual return in the Form GSTR-9 / Form GSTR-9A and reconciliation statement in the Form GSTR-9C for the financial year 2017-18 is extended from August 31, 2019 to November 30, 2019," the Central Board of Indirect Taxes & Customs said in a statement.

Unnao Gang Rape: CBI Gets Time till 9 Sept to Finish Probe

A Delhi court on Monday granted the CBI time till 9 September to complete its investigation and file a status report in the 2017 Unnao gangrape case, one of the four related cases transferred by the Supreme Court from Uttar Pradesh.

District Judge Dharmesh Sharma approved the investigative agency's request seeking more time to further investigate the case in which Shubham Singh, Naresh Tiwari and Brajesh Singh Yadav are the accused.

Jet Lenders Give Third Extension for EOI till 31 Aug

The lenders to the defunct Jet Airways on Monday for the third time extended the deadline for submission of expressions of interest for stake sale in the bankrupt airline to 31 August after a new bidder showed interest post-August 10 deadline.

After the second deadline on August 10, there were three bids, but one opted out while the another one did not qualify, leaving just one in the race.

The decision to extend the deadline for EoIs was taken by the lenders at a meeting of committee of creditors held in the financial capital.

"The lenders have decided to extend deadline to submit EoIs till 31 August," a banker told PTI.

16 Imposters Held in Bihar During Physical Exam for Constables

Sashastra Seema Bal officials on Monday arrested 16 alleged imposters during a physical examination for recruitment of constables in Bihar's Kishanganj.

The accused were caught during verification of biometric finger-prints, SSB 12th Battalion Commandant Pramod Devrani said.

SSB was conducting the examination at the BSF camp in Khagra to fill up posts of constables in Central Armed Police Forces.

7 Hurt as Mob Ransacks Nandurbar Railway Station; Attacks Cops

A mob hurled stones and ransacked Nandurbar railway station in Maharashtra over alleged inaction by police in taking action against a man accused of molesting a woman passenger on train, prompting police to fire tear gas shells on Sunday night.

Seven persons, including two police officers - one of the GRP and another belonging to the city police - three constables, and two passengers on platforms were injured in the incident.
