UN Mission Head Says Risk of Genocide Recurring in Myanmar

The head of a UN fact-finding mission on Myanmar says that "there is a serious risk of genocide recurring" against the country's Rohingya Muslim minority.

Marzuki Darusman told the General Assembly's human rights committee Tuesday that "if anything, the situation of the Rohingya in Rakhine state has worsened." The Independent International Fact-Finding Mission on Myanmar said in its final report last month that Myanmar should be held responsible in international legal forums for alleged genocide against the Rohingya.

Kerala Reduces Fines for Specific Offences Under New Motor Vehicle Act

Kerala cabinet has decided to reduce fines for certain offences under the new Motor Vehicle Act. For speeding, a first time offence by a light motor vehicle, while the existing fine is Rs. 1000 to 2000, the state government has fixed it at Rs. 1500.

For heavy vehicles, speeding first time offence, the fine according to the new Motor Vehicle Act is Rs. 2000 to 4000, but the state government has fixed it for Rs. 3000. For using mobile phone while driving, the fine was between Rs. 1000 to 5000, but the state government has fixed it at Rs. 2000.

Trump Announces Turkey Sanctions 'Will Be Lifted'

US President Donald Trump announced on Wednesday that the United States would be lifting sanctions on Turkey, hailing the success of a ceasefire along its border with Syria.

"Earlier this morning, the government of Turkey informed my administration that they would be stopping combat and their offensive in Syria and making the ceasefire permanent," he said in a televised address from the White House.

"I have, therefore, instructed the Secretary of the Treasury to lift all sanctions imposed on 14 October in response to Turkey's original offensive moves against the Kurds in Syria's northeast border region," he added.
