China Confirms Aircraft Carrier Sailed Through Taiwan Strait

China confirmed on Monday that its first domestically built aircraft carrier had sailed through the Taiwan Strait for "routine" training and tests after Taipei accused Beijing of intimidation around upcoming elections.

The ship, which has yet to be named, is Beijing's second carrier and will add massive firepower to its navy as it faces tensions with self-ruled Taiwan and regional neighbours around the disputed South China Sea.

Top ULFA Leader Arrested on Extortion Charges

A special investigation team (SIT) of the Arunachal Police has arrested a top United Liberation Front of Assam Independent (ULFA-I) leader for allegedly extorting money from high-profile politicians, a senior officer said on Monday.

Ranjan Bikash Borgohain, a resident of Dibrugarh district in Assam, was apprehended last week on the outskirts of Guwahati by a team of officers, led by SIT Superintendent of Police Navdeep Singh Brar.

He was produced before the court the next day which remanded him in seven-day police custody, Brar said.

"Borghain claimed that he was a senior commander of the banned outfit. We have seized from his possession letters addressed to leaders of various parties with signatures of United Liberation Front of Assam (Independent) deputy commander-in-chief Drishti Rajkhowa.

Girl Dies, Several Feared Missing as French River Bridge Collapses

A 15-year-old girl was killed after a suspension bridge over a river in southwest France collapsed on Monday, causing a car, a truck and possibly a third vehicle to plunge into the water, local authorities said.

Four people were rescued but several others were feared missing after the collapse of the bridge linking the towns of Mirepoix-sur-Tarn and Bessieres, 30 kilometres north of the city of Toulouse, the fire service and local security chief Etienne Guyot said.

Nusrat Jahan Admitted to Hospital With Respiratory Trouble

Actress and TMC MP Nusrat Jahan was admitted to a city-based private hospital after she complained of respiratory problems, a statement issued by her family said on Monday.

Police sources, however, said that Jahan, after celebrating her husband Nikhil Jain's birthday, had taken an overdose of medicine, following which her health condition deteriorated on Sunday night.

A statement released from her family said, "Nusrat was admitted to hospital due to a respiratory issue. She has a history of Asthma... "

"Jahan is at ICU, but her condition is stable. She is conscious," it said.

A senior official at the hospital, where the TMC MP is currently undergoing treatment, told PTI that Jahan's condition improved on Monday morning.

No Daytime Flights as Kochi Airport Work Set to Begin

The four-month-long runway re- surfacing work at Kochi Airport is set to start on Wednesday and there would be no flights from 10 am to 6 pm till 28 March 2020.

Since almost all services have already been re- scheduled between 6 pm and 10 am, the project period would see cancellation of only five services during the major runway re-surfacing period, a statement from the airport said on Monday.

Cochin International Airport Ltd (CIAL) has started the preparatory work for the project well in advance and thereby ensured the minimal cancellation of services with the co-operation of the airlines, the statement said.

Navies of India, Qatar Begin 5-Day Joint Exercise

Navies of India and Qatar have started a five-day bilateral maritime exercise in Doha that includes surface action, air defence, maritime surveillance as well as social and sports events, an official statement said on Monday.
