Amid the ongoing impeachment hearings against him by a Democrats-dominated Congressional panel, US President Donald Trump has asserted that he has the right to speak and the freedom of speech.

The president made the assertion while accusing the opposition Democratic party of denying the Republicans the due process in the House-initiated impeachment proceedings against him.

Gunmen Fire on Buses Carrying Muslim Sri Lankan Voters, No Casualties Reported

Gunmen opened fire on a convoy of buses carrying minority Muslim voters in northwest Sri Lanka on Saturday, 16 November, hours before polling in presidential elections got under way, police said.

There were no immediate reports of casualties, but a police official said the attackers had burnt tyres on the road and set up makeshift road blocks to ambush the convoy of more than 100 vehicles.

Dalit Woman Gang Raped, Thrashed in UP's Shamli

A 30-year-old Dalit woman was allegedly gang raped and beaten up by four men at Ahata Gos Garh village in Shamli district here, police said on Saturday.

The incident took place on Thursday when the woman had gone to the fields to relieve herself.

The men dragged her to a sugarcane field and took turns to rape her, they said, adding that the victim was also beaten up when she tried to resist.

Three of the accused have been identified as Sachin, Sosing and Rohit while the third man is yet to be identified, said Sandeep Balyan, SHO, Thanabhawan police station, adding that all accused are absconding.

Anil Ambani Resigns as Director of Reliance Communications

Anil Ambani has resigned as director of Reliance Communications, the debt-ridden company said in a filing on Saturday.

According to the filing, Ambani along with Chhaya Virani, Ryna Karani, Manjari Kacker, Suresh Rangachar have resigned as directors of RCom.

"Your good office may also note that Shri Manikantan V., has also tendered his resignation as a director and Chief Financial Officer of the Company earlier. The aforementioned resignations shall be put up to the committee of creditors of the Company for their consideration," the filing added.

RCom, which is currently going through insolvency process, has posted a consolidated loss of Rs 30,142 crore for July-September 2019 due to provisioning for liabilities after the Supreme Court ruling on statutory dues.

Congress MP, MLAs Held for Staging Stir Over Road Condition

Around 300 Congress functionaries, including party MP Vasantha Kumar, and MLAs Prince, Vijayadharani and Rajesh were arrested for allegedly blocking a road in two places in Kanyakumari district on Saturday, police said.

The party activists were demanding repair of the National Highway from Kavalkinaru to Kaliakavilai, which was riddled with potholes and craters.

The activists they blocked the district collector's office here to press for their demand, the police said.

This led to heated exchanges between the Congressmen and the police, who arrested 300 of them, including the Vasantha Kumar and Prince near the Collectorate.

Rajesh and Vijayadharani and hundreds of others who blocked traffic at Kaliakavilai have also been arrested.

Trafficon the highway linked to Thiruvananthapuram was badly affected as vehicles piled up on both sides.

First Night Trial of Agni II Missile Conducted Successfully

India on Saturday conducted successfully the first night trial of 'Agni-II', its versatile surface-to-surface medium range nuclear capable missile from Dr Abdul Kalam Island off Odisha coast, defence sources told PTI.

The missile has a strike range of 2,000 km, the sources said soon after it blasted off from a mobile launcher at the Launch Complex-4 of the Integrated Test Range (ITR), the sources said.

'Agni-II', an intermediate range ballistic missile (IRBM) has already been inducted into the armed forces.

A defence official said this was the first time that the sophisticated missile was testfired at night.

The entire trajectory of the trial was tracked by a battery of sophisticated radars, telemetry observation stations, electro-optic instruments and two naval ships located near the impact point in the down range area of Bay of Bengal, DRDO sources said.

Maha Guv Announces Financial Aid for Rain-Hit Farmers; Oppn Say Inadequate

Maharashtra Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari on Saturday announced financial relief to farmers whose crop was damaged in unseasonal rains, and ordered its immediate disbursal.

The relief entails Rs 8,000 per hectare up to two hectares for agricultural Kharif crops and Rs 18,000 per hectare up to two hectares for horticulture/perennial crops, an official statement said.

The governor also exempted wards of the affected agriculturists from paying the educational fees, it said.

189 Candidates in the Fray in First Phase of Jharkhand Polls

A total of 189 candidates are in the fray for 13 of the 81 Assembly seats in Jharkhand that are going to the polls in the first phase on November 30, election office sources told PTI.

The last date for withdrawing nomination papers for polls in the phase ended on Saturday.

A total of 228 candidates had filed their nomination papers for polls in the first phase.

Twenty two nomination papers were rejected after scrutiny on Friday, while 17 candidates withdrew their nomination on Saturday, an Election Commission release said here.

Sharad Yadav to Campaign for Opposition Alliance

Former MP Sharad Yadav said he will campaign for the opposition alliance in the coming Jharkhand Assembly elections.

Yadav who met jailed RJD supremo Lalu Prasad at the Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences here, said, “I will come on November 22 or 23 to campaign for the opposition alliance candidates.”

The opposition alliance consists of the JMM, Congress and the RJD.

Yadav, former Janata Dal (United) leader, did not disclose what talks he had with Prasad saying they had talked on several issues.
