States like Tamil Nadu and Uttar Pradesh recorded the biggest one-day spike in COVID-19 cases on Friday. While Tamil Nadu reported 1,438 new infections, taking the state's tally to 28,694, UP saw 496 fresh cases, which took its total to 9,733.
Meanwhile, 2,436 new coronavirus cases took Maharashtra’s count to more than 80,000. At least 139 deaths were also recorded on Friday, taking the toll to 2,849.

Odisha CM Naveen Patnaik says, "The state government has announced weekend shutdown in 11 districts to reduce the frequency of people coming out of their homes in June. It means people will be at their homes for full 8 days in the month of June," ANI reports.
