9 Dead in Building Collapse in Mumbai’s Fort, Uddhav Visits Site

Officials reportedly stated that the building was old and repair work was already in progress.

At least nine people died and several others were injured after a portion of a six-storey building collapsed in Mumbai’s Fort Area on Thursday, 16 July, amid heavy rainfall in the city.

Four fire tenders were rushed to the spot and at least 13 people were rescued, reported ANI.

The deceased included a 60-year-old man, whose body was recovered from the debris by the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), the news agency further reported.

"A portion of the ground and upper five-floored residential building has collapsed. Search operation for trapped persons is in progress. As per locals, several people are trapped but we are still awaiting confirmation [sic]," NDTV had quoted officials as saying earlier.

Officials also stated that the building, named ‘Bhanushali’, was old and repair work was already in progress.

Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray visited the site to take stock of the situation.

Earlier on Thursday, in a separate incident, an “L2” chawl had collapsed in Malad, that also killed two people. Rescue operations took place in Malad as well.
