Junior doctors in Kolkata’s NRS Medical College and Hospital were severely attacked on Monday, 10 June. The incident sparked state-wide protests by doctors in many state-run medical colleges in addition to the NRSMCH.
Two interns – Paribaha Mukherjee and Yash Tekhwani – were gravely injured in an attack by of the deceased Mohammed Shahid, an 87-year-old patient who died on Monday night, they allege due to negligence.
The protests have received a lot of support from all across the country.
A rally to condemn the attack was held at NRSMCH.
Messages of support came in not only from West Bengal, but all of India.

Chief Minister Mamta Banerjee asked for the protests to be stopped and for healthcare services to be resumed.
People demanded action be taken immediately to promote doctors’ safety.
Mamta Banerjee’s response has received a lot of backlash from netizens.
On the other hand, a few were of the opinion that emergency services and healthcare for babies or pregnant women should not suffer.
A user shared pictures of the aftermath of the boys’ hostel at CNMC being burnt.
A doctor shared videos of people forcibly entering hospital premises and attacking doctors.
A Twitter user shared a junior doctor’s reaction to the attack.
People demanded the government take steps to control the situation.
