Imagine a world where women feel safe stepping out of their homes, where headlines about with gender-based violence are not splashed across papers everyday.

25 November marks the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, a day marked in hope of turning this ideal into a reality.

Today kicks off the annual international campaign ‘16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence’ that runs until 10 December, Human Rights Day.

Violence against women and girls (VAWG) is one of the most widespread, persistent and devastating human rights violations in our world. The stigma, shame and silence around reporting these crimes encourages a culture where these crimes are still committed within families, within organised crime, and by strangers, in many parts of the world with impunity.

Social media movements such as #MeToo, #TimesUp, #NotOneMore have been successful in the recent past in giving voice to social issues that are usually swept under the carpet. UN Agencies’s campaign #OrangeTheWorld aims to highlight the struggle for the elimination of violence against women.
