“What are you talking about... you f***ing egomaniac!”

That’s John Oliver in the latest episode of ‘Last Week Tonight’, as he lambastes US President Donald Trump for his recent decision to pull out of the Paris Agreement.

Now, Oliver has shown little patience for Trump’s antics in the past, but in this episode, his frustration with Trump’s logic and ‘non-phrases’ seems palpable. He breaks down what it means for the US to pull out of the historic treaty and remarks that even the ‘cool Pope’ at the Vatican has called it a “disaster for everyone”.

But more than enjoying this roast of Trump (because that’s not so hard to come by, is it?), what’s significant is the alarming data Oliver narrates about climate change.

Given our current rate of CO2 emissions, in the next 20 years we may be well past the safe threshold and on our way to an actual apocalypse! And 20 years, as Oliver points out, is really not that long.

Oliver also points out that while Trump backs his decision by his usual rhetoric of saving American businesses, there were several who were in favour of the treaty and also made an effort to change Trump’s mind.

In fact, various companies like Apple, Google, Facebook, Intel and Microsoft are among the hundreds of businesses that declared their intention to continue working towards reducing carbon emissions, despite Trump’s decision.

The coalition, calls itself "We are still in”, and firms that were noticeably absent were Oracle, IBM, and all the major telecommunications providers.
