We’re living in a time where the world the has been getting increasingly polarised. Over the last few years, a conversation that has been cropping up with most of my friends is about the state of politics in the nation. “What is your ideology? Who do you support? Why do you support them?” are questions that are constantly thrown around.

The debates often get heated and I often scramble to exit those conversations. Which is why we thought it would be interesting for four millennials at The Quint to sit down and chat about how their political opinions have impacted their relationships. How open are they to different opinions? We answer that and more.

Some of the questions that cropped up are:

To Friend or Unfriend?

To what degree does a political opinion matter in a friendship? There are people who can’t imagine being friends with someone who has a differing political opinion from theirs. Simply put they believe that somebody with a differing ideology might not want their personal destruction but could want their ‘systematic destruction.’

Politics? Umm…Who Cares

What about people who don’t have a political opinion at all? Should they step out of their privilege and at least make an attempt to know what’s happening around them? Or are they the nicest people to be friends with because they will buy into whatever you tell them!

Extreme for You, Maybe Not for Me

You can have a political stand, but what’s the point if you’re not willing to even hear the other side? Extremism of any kind, is a big no no. So are people who resort to violent means to get their point across, you may not agree with them but can you relax?!

To Date or Hate?

Most dating apps nowadays have a section where you can mention your political leanings and it has become an important conversation. Couples have separated because of differing political ideologies.
