Padmaavat hit the theatres on 25 January. The movie was expected to release over a month earlier on 1 December 2017, but due to the raging controversy around the movie, it was delayed. From Deepika Padukone’s attire in the song ‘Ghoomar’ to the plot of the movie, the Karni Sena claimed that Rajputs were being portrayed in ‘a bad light’ in Padmaavat.

So, The Quint did a simple quiz to see how much history we actually know about the movie. We also asked fellow Quintees how they knew about Padmaavat director Sanja Leela Bhansali and the cast; Ranvir Singh, Deepika Padukone and Shahid Kapoor.

Some Facts

What was the full name of the poet who wrote Padmavat and who narrates the poem?

The movie Padmaavat is based on a poem called ‘Padmavat’ written by Malik Muhammad Jayasi, which is said to be a narration of Rani Padmini’s beauty by a parrot called Hiraman. The Sufi poet wrote the poem in 1540.

Rani Padmini committed suicide because Ratan Singh dies in a battle with which king?

Most would think that since Alauddin Khilji invaded Chittor, Ratan Singh must have lost the battle to him – bu no. Ratan Singh was fighting a battle with King Devpal of Kumbhalmer.
