Tulsi Vivah 2018: All You Need To Know

Devotees across the country will perform rituals and offer prayers on the auspicious occasion of Tulsi Vivah as the Dev Uthani Ekadashi falls on Monday,19 November.

Dev Uthani Ekadashi is significant for Hindus as it was on this day that Goddess Tulsi was married to Shaligram, the stone incarnation of Lord Vishnu.

Hindu devotees celebrate the day with great zeal and fervour. It is believed that those who don’t have daughters can “experience the pleasure of ‘kanyadaan’ (marrying one’s daughter into a good family) through Tulsi’s marriage,” NDTV reported.

According to the mythology, the occasion is “extremely auspicious” as Lord Vishnu wakes up after four months on the day of Dev Uthani Ekadashi. Ceremonies such as puja and havan (prayers), weddings and mundan (head-shaving ceremony) are often performed by devotees to mark the day.

This year, the Ekadashi will begin at 2 pm on 19 November and last till 2.40 pm on 20 November, the report said.

The devotees who conduct the symbolic Tulsi marriage observe a fast before the ritual. Others also keep the basil (Tulsi) plant on a plate in their courtyard as it “keeps the atmosphere positive at all times.”
