Anil Kumble

Anil Kumble

Former cricketer, Indian team captain and coach, Anil Kumble was born today. Recently, Kumble resigned from the post of the Indian cricket team coach due to differences with captain Virat Kohli.

The 47-year-old has played 132 Test matches and 271 ODIs in his career. In this time, he has taken 619 Test wickets and 337 wickets in ODIs.

He played his first cricket match against England in 1990 and his last against Australia in 2008.

Simi Garewal

Simi Garewal

Bollywood actor Simi Garewal celebrates her 70th birthday today. Garewal was born to a Sikh family in Muksar, Punjab in 1947.

Simi and her sister Amruta were raised in England and after schooling, Simi returned to India. 

Her father, JS Garewal was in the Indian Army and her sister Pamela Chopra is the wife of famous filmmaker Yash Chopra.

Garewal is best known for her films ‘Do Badan’, ‘Saathi’, ‘Mera Naam Joker’ and ‘Karz’. Her latest onscreen outing includes her talk show, ‘Rendezvous’.

Smita Patil

Actress Smita Patil

Today would have been yesteryear actor Smita Patil’s 62nd birthday. Patil was a member of Mumbai’s Women’s Center and several of her films explored social issues and women’s rights.

Patil’s father Shivajirao Patil was a minister in the Maharashtra Government.

She was awarded the Padma Shri in 1985 and received the National Award for Best Actress for her film ‘Chakra’. She died on 13 December 1986, at the age of 31.

RK Shanmukham Chetty

RK Shanmukham Chetti Azad was India's first finance minister. He presented the first budget of Independent India on 26 November 1947. Shanmukham took charge from 15 August 1947, and held the post till 1949, when Jawaharlal Nehru was the country’s Prime Minister.

Shanmukham was an advocate by profession and had great knowledge about the economy.

Shetty was the president of the Central Assembly from 1933 to 1935. From 1933 to 1935, he was also the Diwan of the Cochin Kingdom. Chetti was considered to be a strong supporter of the Tamil-Christian movement.
