Chandigarh, Aug 10 (IANS) A Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) special court here on Friday sentenced IPS officer Deshraj Singh to three years in jail in a 2012 bribery case.
Deshraj was convicted by the court on Wednesday.
The 2008-batch Indian Police Service (IPS) officer was posted as Superintendent of Police in Chandigarh Police in 2012 when he demanded a bribe of Rs 2 lakh from a Chandigarh police inspector in connection with an inquiry against the latter.
The inspector informed the CBI, which laid a trap and caught Deshraj while accepting the bribe from Inspector Anokh Singh, who was Station House Officer (SHO) of the Sector 26 police station.
Deshraj had demanded the money to give a favourable report on the inspector, who was facing inquiry for dereliction of duty and insubordination.
Deshraj was arrested and booked under the Prevention of Corruption Act.
The IPS officer had denied the allegations of bribery against him.
