Ahead of the release of his film Padmavat on 25 January, Ranveer Singh left fans stunned with an image of a drastic physical transformation. From a buff body for Padmavat to ripped, lean muscle for Gully Boy, Ranveer seems to have covered the entire spectrum of physical fitness.

Ranveer reportedly locked himself up in his apartment and stayed in the headspace of the menacing character of Alauddin Khilji for weeks to prep for his role. He had to to seek therapy to rid him of the detrimental influences of playing Khilji.

While the transformation is of course spectacular, but how healthy is it truly? While we don’t know how long Ranveer took to undergo this change - can sudden weight loss and gain have serious consequences on the body?

When FIT reached out holistic fitness expert, Vesna Jacob for a comment on the same, she said that even though it’s not recommended, if done properly, it can be achieved in a safe way.

Such a transformation can be achieved safely, but in this specific case, it also depends on how much time Ranveer gave himself. Of course starving yourself blindly is wrong and will have bad consequences on the body in the form of hair loss, affecting bone density, causing cardiac issues and kidney problems, and basically causing  havoc in the system.

Jacob adds that if a body is made to undergo such extreme changes only for short periods of time after which life goes back to normal, it is still alright. The point to keep in mind is to lose weight consciously and not cause depletion of nutrients, she concludes.

Christian Bale lost about 30 kgs for his role in The Machinist.

Sudden changes in the body by actors for roles is not a priori. Two of the most talked about male body transformations have been Christian Bale for The Machinist for which he reduced himself to a mere 54 kgs, dropping almost 30 kgs. Bale is six feet tall. This was followed by buffing up for Batman Begins.

Jared Leto put on about 30 kgs for the character of Mark Chapman in Chapter 27.

Another transformation is of Jared Leto for Requiem For a Dream for which he dropped over 10 kgs. A couple of years later he put on extra weight (close to 30 kgs) for his role in Chapter 27 and once again surprised everyone.
