FIT recently caught up with Lara Dutta and Mahesh Bhupathi and asked them about some basic tips on parenting, nutrition and raising a child.

Lara said that even though a child's diet is often in the mother hands, both Mahesh and her play an active role in their six-year-old daughter’s diet. Saira’s always been an active child, she added, and therefore nutrition and diet become very important for her upbringing.

While raising a child it’s important to ensure a healthy lifestyle, however Saira is too young right now for them to take any specific decisions regarding her diet.

Saira’s school provides her lunch, but they allow her to carry a snack box sometimes with her which is a mixture of something both tasty and healthy.

The couple further added that their house has a balanced approach to healthy and junk food. If they make strict rules, the child will rebel, so it’s important to reach a middle ground, agreed both Lara and Mahesh.

It’s fine sometimes to give in to Saira’s demands because children as it is are so active. They are always running around and burning lots of calories, in case they are not, parents need to ensure that they do.

It’s also important to stock up the house with the right kind of snacks. Lara added that even if Saira is reaching for crisps or biscuits, it’s important to ensure that there is some nutritional value to those. Additionally, they also allow Saira one binge in a week which is mostly oats pancakes on Saturdays, concluded Mahesh.

There has to be a regular give and take between the child and the parent, said Lara. As long as she wins the battle 70 percent of the time, she will take it.

There will be times when the child will push for more and how to work your way around is something you can only learn by trial and error, provided Lara.
