The trailer of Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s ambitious Padmavati sets the perfect tone for an audience that’s waiting for the star-studded historical epic.

Unlike Bhansali’s usual high-decibel, garish and in your face storytelling, the 3-minute trailer of this much awaited period film is restrained, the build-up is rhythmic and the tempo is consistent.

A coy Deepika, a regal Shahid and a barbaric Ranveer lend a vibrant aura to mood of the trailer.

With the blockbuster Baahubali having left a huge impact, one would have thought that a comparison would be inevitable. But, the visuals of Padmavati both in design and tone are so distinct that one doesn’t feel the need to recall the SS Rajamouli film.

The makers seemed to have confidently held on to their vision for Padmavati, giving the film it’s distinct visual identity.

The graph of the trailer climbs steadily - the innocence and tranquility of the scenes between Padmavati (Deepika) and Maharawal Ratan Singh (Shahid) are intercut with scenes of a manic Alauddin Khilji (Ranveer).

And then comes the confrontation as Khilji’s army is seen a panoramic shot racing on horseback to attack Chittor.

After a quick montage of the three main characters which add pace to the momentum, Bhansali leaves you with Padmavati’s emphatic dialogue “Rajputi kangan mein utni hi taaqat hai jitni Rajputi talwar mein...”

I’m looking forward to the film already, but it will be a pity if Ranveer Singh and Deepika Padukone don’t come face to face after all this build up (remember those reports which came out after the Karni Sena protests?).
