This week’s new release MS Dhoni: The Untold Story is a story we have already been told about. Catapulted to success by talent and sheer determination, we all are aware of how this Ranchi boy ‘Mahi’ went on to become the most successful captain of the Indian cricket team. The inspiring tale sponsored by the star himself has been very smartly put to use by director Neeraj Pandey. The assumption is writ large – everyone loves MSD! But would the same love be shown to this Test match of a film made on him? That would depend on how patient one can be for 3 hours 10 mins to be precise.

Sushant Singh Rajput melts into his role. With Mahi’s characteristic hairstyle, expressions, body language, he is brilliant on screen. Perfectly supported by a terrific ensemble cast that includes the likes of Anupam Kher, Rajesh Sharma, Kumud Mishra and Bhumika Chawla, who help infuse a lot of heart into the narrative. But post interval, the proceedings lack the required momentum and pace. It is reduced to a Dhoni “bhajan” singing paeans about his grit and passion while giving us little insight into the complexities of his character. A token scene referring to his rift with senior players and his much speculated upon rivalry with Yuvraj Singh is all that we get. (A special mention for Herry Tangri who plays Yuvi on screen and is spot on!)

Disha Patani and Kiara Advani play Dhoni’s love interests on screen and while they are easy on the eyes and share an endearing chemistry with Sushant Singh Rajput, the unnecessary songs do little to enrich our watching experience. A lot of real cricket match footage and commentary has been used (with Sushant’s face super imposed on Dhoni’s) but the excitement and thrill is marred by predictability!

Dhoni, our hero, is far more vibrant than this monotonous character sketch. It is worth a one time watch only for the stunning effort that Sushant Singh Rajput has put in! I give it 3 QUINTS out of 5!
