Ever since the first look and posters for the upcoming film Saand ki Aankh came out, there were questions regarding leads Taapsee Pannu and Bhumi Pednekar playing real-life 60-something sharp shooters Chandro Tomar and Prakashi Tomar.

While Taapsee, 32, and Bhumi, 30, play younger versions of the characters too, a majority of the film sees them in old-age make up and prosthetics. Apart from the quality of the make-up, many wondered why more age-appropriate female actors weren’t cast instead. After all, there is no dearth of talented older actors in Bollywood, and this would have been the perfect showcase for them in a film with a reportedly feminist message.

The criticism only increased after the first trailer was released on Monday 24 September, which almost entirely sees Bhumi & Taapsee in their older avatars.

On Tuesday, Taapsee took to her Instagram stories to respond, bringing up other cases such as Aamir Khan in 3 Idiots and Nargis in Mother India where actors played against their age.

Have we really lost the shoulder along with our spine to support people who venture out of their comfort zone to bring about a change? Or these lovely allegations and questions are reserved only for us?

Saand Ki Aankh has been directed by Tushar Hiranandani and produced by Anurag Kashyap and Reliance Entertainment. It is slated to release during Diwali this year.
