Many a skeleton tumbled out of the closet after Harvey Weinstein was exposed by courageous women who spoke up about their harrowing and exploitative experiences in Hollywood. Though not in large numbers, Bollywood is speaking up too.

After Kangana Ranaut supported the teen star who was trolled for revealing her traumatic ordeal, where she was allegedly molested on flight, now Shah Rukh Khan and Akshay Kumar are encouraging women to not stay mum in the face of sexual misconduct.

Akshay Kumar admitted in an interview to a publication that sexual misconduct is pervasive and that women in the field of entertainment coming out in the US may encourage other women globally to speak up.

As SRK spoke to the same publication, he acknowledged his own privilege saying that he was a successful man in a patriarchal system.

“We should not just let it be about ‘Oh this man behaved like this’ and ‘This is so shocking,’ or all of that. But we should respect the emotion of the women taking such a strong step in coming out, and being so brave, and help stop this from happening in our individual industries. The sad part of it is that you don’t know if it could be happening right under your nose.”

Twinkle Khanna spoke to the same publication on the issue.

“It’s an outreach that’s been suppressed for very long. Women are tired of being grabbed and groped. Women are tired of bending over backwards to get ahead in the workforce, bending over backwards to the point where sometimes they have to lie horizontal in order to go forward.”
