Actor Randeep Hooda came to Alia Bhatt’s defence after Kangana Ranaut lashed out at her, calling her performance in Gully Boy “mediocre”.

Randeep, who co-starred with Alia in Imtiaz Ali’s 2014 film Highway, tweeted lauding her for always striving to improve her work without letting criticism faze her.

“Dearest @alia08 I’m so glad you are not letting the opinions of very occasional actors and chronic victims affect you and your work.. kudos to you for your continued efforts to out do yourself,” he wrote.

Kangana Ranaut’s sister and manager Rangoli Chandel didn’t seem too pleased with his words. She retaliated with a series of tweets alleging that Randeep had harassed Kangana on the sets of Ungli, though she didn’t specify any particular incident. She went on to call him a “permanent failure” saying that his efforts to curry favour with Karan Johar had also proved fruitless.

Earlier, Rangoli had also slammed Alia Bhatt and her mother Soni Razdan for holding British passports. She called them “non Indians” who were “living off this land”.

To which, Soni Razdan responded saying that Mahesh Bhatt is the man who had given Kangana her break in Bollywood and yet, the actor attacks his wife and daughter.

Rangoli was then quick to respond that it was in fact Anurag Basu who gave Kangana her break and not Mahesh Bhatt. She also accused Mahesh Bhatt of physically attacking Kangana at the screening of her own film.

Kangana, who has taken repeated potshots at Alia, had earlier responded to a question comparing the actors’ performances in Manikarnika and Gully Boy by saying, “I am embarrassed. What is there to beat in Gully Boy performance? Same snappy muh phat girl – Bollywood’s idea of a fiery girl, woman empowerment and good acting. Spare me this embarrassment, please. Media has taken filmy kids love too far. Stop pampering mediocre work or else bar will never be raised.”

Alia in turn told an online portal that she respected Kangana’s opinion. “I respect Kangana’s work a lot and I respect her opinion. If she feels a particular way she must have reason to feel that way. I would rather remember how much she had praised me after watching Raazi. And I’d just like to focus on my work. Maybe she will appreciate me again if I work hard enough,” she said.
