On 14 October, Indian-American economist Abhijeet Banerjee was conferred the 2019 Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences . He shares it with Esther Duflo and Michael Kremer. On this special occasion, Javed Akhtar took to social media to congratulate the man. He even compared Banerjee to Guru Dev and Amartya Sen for having made India as well as Bengal proud.

He wrote, “An Indian economist Abhijeet Bannerji shares the Nobel prize with two other economists. Congratulations dear nation . Bengal !! After Guru dev , Amartya Sen once again you have made us proud by a Nobel prize winner !!”

Actor Nimrat Kaur also tweeted, “Massive congratulations to #AbhijitBanerjee on his Nobel Prize win. Happen to be in Stockholm right now...so much pride and respect as an Indian citizen. Bengal sure breeds it’s tigers well !!”

Filmmaker Onir wrote on Twitter, “ Wow wow congratulations #AbhijitBanerjee . What a proud moment for the country and a befitting reply to all those demeaning this iconic institute of learning and free thinking with their divisive and hateful regressive thought factory . #JNU #NoblePrize2019”

Fifty eight-year-old Banerjee was educated at the University of Calcutta, Jawaharlal Nehru University and Harvard University, where he received his PhD in 1988.

He is currently the Ford Foundation International Professor of Economics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, according to his profile on the MIT website. He is also an author. Over the years, he has written several articles and four books, including Poor Economics, which won the Goldman Sachs Business Book of the Year.
